Page 1 of 3 Science & Technology has played an ever-increasing role in our society. Forensic science is a part of its development, where scientific knowledge and scientific methods have been used in crime investigation and criminal justice system. The use of Forensic science in crime investigation is new phenomenon in Nepal. In the field of crime investigation Nepal Police had used scientific aid with the establishment of Photography Unit in 1960 and Finger Print Unit in 1962 within the premises of Police Headquarter Naxal, Kathmandu. In the year 1971 forensic laboratory was established. The main function of the laboratory are to examine and give expert opinion on the crime exhibits/physical evidences. Due to the increasing number of criminal cases and volume of physical evidences the Forensic Section was upgraded to "Central Police Science Laboratory" (CPSL) in 1995. At present this Laboratory is situated within the premises of National Police Academy, Maharajgunj. It is providing forensic science needs of police and judicial component. Objectives Facilities Today, the Central Police Science Laboratory is one of the most comprehnsive laboratories in the country with basic facilities. It has eight units under two main divisions Chemical and Physical Divisions.
